Trends ... friend or foe?

May 27, 2018

As much as I would like to say I am 'trendy' ... I am not much for trends! Those who have been following me for a while now, would probably not be surprised to hear me refer to myself as an ‘unconventional’ Stylist. Simply put, I don’t like rules, trends or telling people how they should or shouldn't dress. I think if it feels fabulous, then it probably is. And if not, does it really matter? News Flash, there’s actually no such thing as the ‘Fashion Police’ ... just people who like to judge.

Trends can have a terribly negative impact on the way women feel about their bodies. Not all styles, cuts and colours of clothing are going to make us feel our best. That's where trends can be harmful to our self esteem, It can be hard seeing garment after garment, rack after rack of clothing that aren't quite right for your body, your shape or even your lifestyle. Wearing clothes that are truly you, will always breathe confidence and make you feel fabulous. Chasing trends will only leave you with a wardrobe full of clothes ... but yet, nothing to wear.

So how do we shop, if we're not shopping Trends? Don’t worry, I’m not suggesting you never buy anything that is fresh of the catwalk or that you see looking fabulous on another woman. I’m just saying consider your body, consider your style, and think about whether it will work in your current wardrobe. Is this particular garment consistent with how you like to dress, if so, then go for it!

If not, then save yourself the heartache and decide to give it a miss.

Instead of looking at trends to inspire your next clothing purchase, try examining your current wardrobe. Is there any gaps, do you actually need anything? If so, be specific in what that is. Then look for classic, timeless pieces that last and will see you through many years. Choose garments that can be adjusted to suit your own personal style. Shop consciously and mindfully ... buying something on a whim rarely works out, or has any longevity in your wardrobe.

Always go shopping with a 'Shopping List' ... yep, just like the one you make when heading to the supermarket. A list will help you avoid buying things you don't need. It'll help make those sale signs less appealing, and those clearance racks less of a trap! Be intentional, only shop when you have the time to try things on, and be certain about your purchase. Most of all, enjoy the process, celebrate you and your individual style. What does your clothing say about you and who you are? Don't worry about what everyone else is wearing ... just be you, you'll nail it every time!,
