Think it, say it, believe it.
Our brains are such incredible things, the way they can change and develop over time is truly remarkable. I'm a strong believer in the power of the mind, I always have been. I believe that everything starts with a single thought and from there, well, the sky is the limit.
The way we think and feel about certain things in life, are a result of a long line of experiences. These experiences carve out who we are, playing a part in how we think about ourselves, and those around us.
Let's talk about Affirmations. Although this concept might seem a little 'hocus-pocus' for some, there is actual scientific studies that show it's value. Positive affirmations form positive connections between nerves in the brain. When we think positive thoughts, our brain releases chemicals related to those positive thoughts. This is true even if you don't believe what you are thinking or saying. Yep, we can actually trick our brains into believing something we don't actually believe - crazy right!? By doing so, we are creating neutral pathways to establish a new way of thinking.
Affirmations can be used in many, or any areas of our lives. The idea is to reshape our thinking in a negative space and create a positive outcome. If I use myself as an example; from a young age my experiences lead me to believe 'my worth was measured on my weight'. This pathway of thinking was deeply ingrained, and affected my life much into adulthood. In an attempt to change this negative thinking, I started using affirmations to redefine how I felt about my weight and my worth.
I repeated daily mantras such as; 'I am more than what I weigh', and 'I am loved regardless of how I look'. I did this over and over for many months and I started to feel different. I noticed a change in the way I approached my life. I noticed I was feeling less anxious and more present. I felt empowered and confident in a way that I hadn't ever felt, even at my thinnest. My priorities changed and my outlook on life shifted. Most importantly, for the first time ever, I stopped comparing myself to others and truly accepted myself as I am.
Comparison is something I remember doing from a very young age. I was the chubby middle child between two thin siblings. One of my earliest memories as a child was being asked by another child; 'why are you so fat and your sister is so skinny'? Comparison wasn't just learned behavior for me, it was pushed in my face. As they say 'comparison is the thief of joy' and I can confirm it really is.
Positive affirmations helped me find the joy again. They have changed the way I feel about myself, and given me a strength to not only accept my body the way it is, but to help others to do so too.
